A Tale of Cheddar Caves: One hundred years ago
A Tale of Cheddar Caves: One hundred years ago by Charlotte M. Yonge was published in Wells at an unknown date, probably in the early 1900s. This is an unusual book, written by a Victorian novelist of note, which does not appear in standard listings of her works. This may be because it could be reprinted from an earlier work: The Cunning Woman's Grandson: a Tale of Cheddar a Hundred Years Ago, published in 1889. The reader is 'advised' that the tale is based on 'unpublished letters', though it is not in letter format, and 'a cunning woman was actually consulted ...' and 'one of the caverns was actually inhabited up to the year 1834, when the ... last woman ... made this her abode'.
This is a collector's item of some interest and not particularly common. The paper and binding were originally cheaply done, and foxing is apparent in all copies seen, including this one. The cover line drawing is stuck on and the five internal illustrations are present.
