An autobiography, Starless Rivers tells the story of a convert from climbing and mountaineering, who turned to caving and cave exploration as a sport. From a tentative start that involved a rescue, this is Des Marshall's tale of how he began, through explorations in the UK and an expedition to the Nare in New Britain, lava tubes in the USA and slate mines of North Wales. Des is also a qualified cave instructor and he delves into his role in training and assessing other leaders as well as his experience in guiding incipient cavers underground.
Starless Rivers was reviewed in Descent (271).

Jim Eyre was a legend in his own lifetime – a hard caver and ardent cave rescuer, but also a talented cartoonist and outrageous raconteur. His two-part autobiography comprising It's Only a Game and The Game Goes On is now available as a set with a considerable reduction in price.
